I work with a lot of amazing and motivated clients, especially around this time of year.

I am thankful that many of my clients are so motivated to make a change – makes my job a little easier ;). We know that motivation is a key ingredient to making a lifestyle change. However what I do need to work on with these clients is goal setting. It’s fine to have goals for weight loss or for feeling more energized, but you have to ask how exactly are you going to do this? What are your action-able steps? There is no magic formula for weight loss or feeling more energized, but there are behaviours that will likely lead to these outcomes.

I try to reframe my clients goals to be around behaviours. Weight loss and feeling energized are simply outcomes. These behaviours can range from mindful eating to strategies to manage food cravings, to meal planning and meal prepping.

One behaviour goal I want to highlight today  is – choose food products with a small ingredient list. The smaller the better. Why? Often the food products with minimal ingredients are less refined, less processed and are more wholesome. They often aren’t just ’empty calories’ and have some nutritional substance to them. This is a better concept to focus on, instead of counting calories, as counting calories or points can cause you to have a negative relationship with food. Counting ingredients reinforces the notion that your body only deserves the most nutritious and wholesome foods.

I’ve partnered up with Canada Bread to develop and showcase 4 easy, real-food recipes that work perfectly across many diets. Sanissimo Salmas crackers are wholesome, gluten-free and are made with 4 ingredients! Sanissimo Salmas crackers contain Non-GMO whole grain corn flour, salt, hydrated lime for flavour and plant sourced tocopherols to maintain crispiness, a form of Vitamin E found in vegetables and other foods.
