Nutrition Trends Not Worth The Hype

I will apologize in advance for the negative spin on the post! I have written posts on some of these trends separately and some I have not mentioned before, however I felt it was necessary to get them all off my chest. I think as a society we are largely over-complicating nutrition and we are always looking to alter our way of eating in order to achieve our goals. This has created a culture of elimination and food shame…which are not healthy ways of viewing food! Let me dive into some of my least favourite food trends.

Cauliflower Pizza Crust

A surprisingly easy and tasty concoction!  Fantastic way to sneak in some vegetables and replace the gluten if you so desire. It is different from real pizza crust, as it does not possess the doughy and soft texture. However this will likely win you over if you prefer thin-crust pizza – just ensure that you bake the cauliflower crust until very set and crisp! This dish is also less laboursome than making a ‘real’ pizza from scratch – no need to knead the dough and place it aside for the yeast to let it rise, etc. Enjoy!

How to Expertly Navigate the Yogurt Aisle

The yogurt aisle is the most confusing and overwhelming aisle to navigate at the grocery store! It’s definitely the section I spend the longest time in. The yogurt aisle isn’t what it used to be – greek yogurt has recently taken over a sizeable chuck of the refrigerator case, leaving non-greeks to compete for the remaining real estate. Meanwhile, both greek and non-greek yogurts are branching out with new claims, nutrient content, flavours, ect.

Lemon-Parmesan Roasted Broccoli

Broccoli

Tried, tested and true – I’ve witnessed this broccoli recipe get sampled (and liked!) by those who had not touched broccoli since they were served it, against their will, during childhood. This is without a doubt the best broccoli recipe I have tried to date.  By roasting the broccoli, you get some nice charred edges while maintaining the color and texture of the veggie.  The combination of garlic, olive oil, lemon zest and juice just can’t be beat.  Add the warm nutty flavor of toasted almonds and the salty melty goodness of the parmesan and there you have it. A must try!

If you’re finding that you have no time for breakfast in the morning … well this is where that excuse stops. These little guys are quick, wholesome and a tasty breakfast solution! Make a batch on sunday, have a couple for your morning meals throughout the week and freeze some for another time!
